The thin film lower performance at high rf field is often attributed to the defects observed in the elaborated Nb layer, sometimes originated from defects inherited from the substrate itself. Niobium thin film coated copper superconducting radio frequency elliptical cavities have demonstrated for many years their strong potential as an alternative to bulk niobium cavities. The HRDSR processed Nb showed a high tensile strength of 450 MPa, and the major strengthening mechanism for the HRDSR-processed Nb was dislocation-density strengthening at large thickness reductions. The HRDSR-processed samples exhibited weaker α-fiber and stronger γ-fiber than the conventionally processed samples, which indicates that the high shear deformation induced by HRDSR discourages the development of α-fiber while promoting the development of γ-fiber. CDRX more preferentially proceeded on α-fiber grains. More effective grain refinement of the initial microstructure through continuous dynamic recrystallization (CDRX) occurred in the samples processed by HRDSR, but the overall degree of grain refinement was small, despite having undergone severe plastic deformation due to the low rate of CDRX. The evolution of the microstructure and texture in body-centered cubic (BCC) niobium (Nb) during conventional rolling and high-ratio differential rolling (HRDSR) at room temperature were compared. As a consequence, incremental sheet forming of this non-conventional material can be considered a faisible way of manufacturing highly customized components. In any case, very good surface finishing and workability of niobium sheets, despite their brittle nature, is found when incrementally formed. ![]() The results highlight that a proper choice of the contact conditions can avoid the occurrence of galling while preserving an optimal carrying out of the process. ![]() From the tests, the formability limits were determined, the forming forces were acquired and analysed, the quality of the worked surfaces was evaluated with measures of roughness and high-magnification visual inspection, as well as the failures of the sheets were observed and interpreted.
